1. ACCESSING THE CONNECTOR
To access the connector, open Tableau desktop.
On the left-hand side, under Connect to a Server, click 'Web Data Connector'.
In the URL box, type http://tableau.cognetik.com/connector.html and hit Enter.
2. CREATING A COGNETIK ACCOUNT
Click on the 'Don’t have an account?' button
Fill in the fields, click 'Sign Up' and your account is created on the spot.
3. LINKING YOUR ACCOUNTS
In order to bring in data from your cloud source platforms, you need to link your accounts.
Click on the 'Link a New Credential' button. A list of the available connections is displayed.
Click on the logo of the platform you want to link. We chose to link our Google account for this article.
Insert your Google credentials.
Click 'Allow' in order to finalize the process.
This gives Cognetik access to all your Google accounts available in our connector, like Google Analytics, AdWords, YouTube, and DoubleClick. This way, all your Google accounts are linked in one step.
To link other accounts, just click on the other logos and the process is fairly similar (except for Kochava which requires you to create an API key).
You can even add multiple users to the same platform, by repeating the process.
4. BUILDING AND SUBMITTING A QUERY
After you choose your provider, you need to select a credential in the drop-down menu. As mentioned earlier, since you can link multiple accounts for the same platform, this gives you the option to select which credential you want to use.
Under 'Account', choose one of the Google Analytics profiles your credential has access to (if there are more than one) and choose the property and profile you need to extract data from.
DIMENSIONS & METRICS
You can choose a combination of Dimensions and Metrics from the ones provided in the drop-down menu.
Keep in mind that these are provided by the Google API (in this specific case) and Cognetik has no control over the selection of metrics and dimensions that are displayed, as the connector acts like a pipeline that transfers data from your platform in Tableau, without processing it.
Not all combinations of metrics and dimensions work. Each dimension and metric has a scope so it only makes sense to combine dimensions and metrics that share the same scope.
You also have the option to select a segment you created in Google Analytics.
GRANULARITY, CALENDAR, AND PRESETS
In terms of granularity, you can choose between:
- no granularity
There are three types of calendars:
- Standard calendar - Uses Gregorian calendar (the first day of the week is Sunday, and months are determined by the calendar dates)
- Retail calendar - Uses the National Retail Federation calendar (The first day of the week is Sunday, but the months are defined by the 4-5-4 NRF calendar)
- Custom calendar - Select the day the week starts (very useful if the first day of the week is not Sunday, this option allows the user to define custom start days for weeks). This comes in handy when pulling data from a data source at a weekly or monthly granularity because data would already be correctly aggregated at these levels, with the Cognetik Cloud Connector doing all the heavy lifting.
You can also select a Timezone for your data, and choose between a Preset or a custom date range using the 'Start Date' and 'End Date'.
The row limit is 50,000 rows.
Top limit is only applicable to Adobe Analytics (filters out and returns the first 'n' rows ordered by the first metric chosen).
PREVIEWING AND SUBMITTING THE QUERY
You can Name your extract and Preview your request before creating a data extract in Tableau. This option helps confirm you have the correct data.
The preview section offers a few features to make data exploration easier:
After the data is displayed, click 'Submit'
Click 'Update Now' to display the data.
5. BUILDING YOUR DASHBOARD IN TABLEAU
After the data is displayed, go to 'Sheet 1' to start working with the data.
